The aim of this paper is to discuss in a pedagogical way the problem of the emergence of classical behaviour in certain physical systems which, in principle, are correctly described by quantum mechanics. It is stressed that the limit → 0 is not sufficient and the crucial role played by the environment must be taken into account. In particular, recalled is the old problem raised by Mott in 1929 (Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 126 79) concerning the straight tracks observed in a cloud chamber, produced by… Expand

We define and investigate, via numerical analysis, a one dimensional toy-model of a cloud chamber. An energetic quantum particle, whose initial state is a superposition of two identical wave packetsExpand
The Mott Problem in One Dimension
In the α decay of a nucleus, the tracks left in the medium by the α particle are linear, even though its initial wave function is spherically symmetric. Understanding this quantum phenomenon has beenExpand

Trajectories for the wave function of the universe from a simple detector model
Inspired by Mott's (1929) analysis of particle tracks in a cloud chamber, we consider a simple model for quantum cosmology which includes, in the total Hamil- tonian, model detectors registeringExpand

A Collision Problem in the Wave Mechanics
In the present work the wave mechanics are applied to the discussion of a collision problem of a more complicated type than has, I think, hitherto been done. Though there is nothing very new in theExpand

A modified quantum dynamics for the description of macroscopic objects is constructed and it is shown that it forbids the occurrence of linear superpositions of states localized in far-away spatial regions and induces an evolution agreeing with classical mechanics. Expand
