Abstract Eight hundred and ninety-five consecutive placentas were examined grossly to assess the incidence of circumvallate and circummarginate placentas. Fifty-eight (6.5 per cent) were found to be circumvallate and 228 (25.5 per cent) circummarginate. The types did not appear to have any clinical significance, in particular there was no increase in antepartum hemorrhage, premature delivery, or hydrorrhea.
