Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), a common contagious disease that usually affects children, can be caused by enteroviruses. Coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) and enterovirus 71(EV-71) are the major aetiological agents of HFMD. Other EV serotypes, CV-A4-7, CV-A9-10, CV-B1-3, CV-B5, E-4 and E-19, have also been found associated with both sporadic infections and outbreaks of HFMD. In India, outbreaks of HFMD have been documented; however, molecular characterization of the aetiological agents has…
Genotypes of the Enterovirus Causing Hand Foot and Mouth Disease in Shanghai, China, 2012-2013
TLDR
It is demonstrated that the enterovirus genotypes causing HFMD were diversified, and there was an increasing prevalence of the non-EV71 and non-CA16 enteroviruses from 2012 to 2013.
Molecular Diagnosis of Enteroviruses Associated with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD)
TLDR
The HFMD cases reported here support the previously observed characteristics of CV-A16 infection, and use of sensitive molecular method, RT-PCR targeted against conserved and variable regions of the EV genome revealed the presence of significant EV RNA positivity.
Hand, foot, and mouth disease associated with coxsackievirus A10: more serious than it seems
TLDR
The genetic evolution of circulating strains was analyzed and studies on the epidemiology, laboratory diagnosis, clinical manifestations, molecular Epidemiology, seroepidemiology, animal models of CV-A10, and vaccines and antiviral strategies against this genotype are reviewed.
Profiles of Human Enteroviruses Associated with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Nanjing, China
TLDR
The profiles of human enteroviruses that caused HFMD outbreaks in Nanjing in 2015 were investigated to provide information useful in the prevention and management of HFMD and the development of relevant vaccines for HFMD in the future.
Coxsackievirus A6 associated hand, foot and mouth disease in adults: clinical presentation and review of the literature.
Prevalence of Coxsackievirus A6 and Enterovirus 71 in Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Nanjing, China in 2013
TLDR
Multiple EV genotypes contributed to HFMD in Nanjing in 2013, and CVA6 was the dominant genotype, as indicated by clinical manifestations and white blood cell analysis of cerebrospinal fluid.
Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD): emerging epidemiology and the need for a vaccine strategy
TLDR
The development of a globally representative multivalent HFMD vaccine could be the best strategy to protect against other major emerging etiologies of HFMD such as CV-A16,CV-A6 and CV- a10.
Circulation of Coxsackievirus A10 and A6 in Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease in China, 2009–2011
Coxsackieviruses A10 (CV-A10) and A6 (CV-A6) have been associated with increasingly occurred sporadic hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases and outbreak events globally. However, our understanding of
Atypical presentation of Hand foot mouth disease (HFMD) caused by enterovirus serotype Coxsackievirus A6, in India
TLDR
Clinically, both the cases were diagnosed as hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), and phylogenetic analysis confirmed that both the CVA6 etiology belonged to the genotype F.
Coxsackievirus A6: a new emerging pathogen causing hand, foot and mouth disease outbreaks worldwide
TLDR
It is indicated that the development of a multivalent vaccine combining EV71, CA16 and CA6 is an urgent necessity to control HFMD.

Control of EV71 epidemics through high-level surveillance and public health intervention needs to be maintained and extended throughout the Asia-Pacific region if an effective live-attenuated vaccine is developed.
A large outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by EV71 and CAV16 in Guangdong, China, 2009
TLDR
Results from this study show that the C-4 genotype has been a prevalent pathogen in mainland China since 1998 and comparison with the three global types of EV71 and the five clusters of genotype C showed that the sequences from mainland China are located in subgenogroup C- 4 and originate from isolates from the Shenzhen area of Guangdong Province.
