Many global circulation models predict supersonic zonal winds and large vertical shears in the atmospheres of short-period jovian exoplanets. Using linear analysis and nonlinear local simulations, we investigate hydrodynamic dissipation mechanisms to balance the thermal acceleration of these winds. The adiabatic Richardson criterion remains a good guide to linear stability, although thermal diffusion allows some modes to violate it at very long wavelengths and very low growth rates. Nonlinearly…
Turbulence-driven thermal and kinetic energy fluxes in the atmospheres of hot Jupiters
We have performed high resolution $3-$dimensional compressible hydrodynamics simulations to investigate the effects of shocks and turbulence on energy transport into hot Jupiter atmospheres, under a
Shear-driven instabilities and shocks in the atmospheres of hot Jupiters
General circulation models of the atmosphere of hot Jupiters have shown the existence of a supersonic eastward equatorial jet. In this paper, we investigate the effects of compressibility on the
Vertical Tracer Mixing in Hot Jupiter Atmospheres
Aerosols appear to be ubiquitous in close-in gas giant atmospheres, and disequilibrium chemistry likely impacts the emergent spectra of these planets. Lofted aerosols and disequilibrium chemistry are
TEMPERATURE STRUCTURE AND ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION OF DRY TIDALLY LOCKED ROCKY EXOPLANETS.
TLDR
Theoretical models for the temperature structure and atmospheric circulation of dry, tidally locked rocky exoplanets with gray radiative transfer are presented and it is shown that rotation only has a strong effect on temperature structure if the atmosphere is hot or thin.
Analytical Models of Exoplanetary Atmospheres. I. Atmospheric Dynamics via the Shallow Water System
Within the context of exoplanetary atmospheres, we present a comprehensive linear analysis of forced, damped, magnetized shallow water systems, exploring the effects of dimensionality, geometry
Hot Jupiter atmospheric flows at high resolution
Global Circulation Models (GCMs) of atmospheric flows are now routinely used to interpret observational data on Hot Jupiters. Localized "equatorial $\beta$-plane" simulations by Fromang et al. (2016)
Atmospheric heat redistribution on hot jupiters
Infrared light curves of transiting hot Jupiters present a trend in which the atmospheres of the hottest planets are less efficient at redistributing the stellar energy absorbed on their daysides—and
THE ROLE OF DRAG IN THE ENERGETICS OF STRONGLY FORCED EXOPLANET ATMOSPHERES
In contrast to the Earth, where frictional heating is typically negligible, we show that drag mechanisms could act as an important heat source in the strongly forced atmospheres of some exoplanets,
Angular momentum transport, layering, and zonal jet formation by the GSF instability: non-linear simulations at a general latitude
We continue our investigation into the nonlinear evolution of the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke (GSF) instability in differentially rotating radiation zones. This instability may be a key player in
Atmospheric Circulation of Hot Jupiters: Dayside-Nightside Temperature Differences
The full-phase infrared light curves of low-eccentricity hot Jupiters show a trend of increasing dayside-to-nightside brightness temperature difference with increasing equilibrium temperature. Here

THERMAL TIDES IN FLUID EXTRASOLAR PLANETS
Asynchronous rotation and orbital eccentricity lead to time-dependent irradiation of the close-in gas giant exoplanets—the hot Jupiters. This time-dependent surface heating gives rise to fluid
THERMODYNAMICS OF ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION ON HOT JUPITERS
Atmospheric circulation on tidally locked exoplanets is driven by the absorption and reradiation of heat from the host star. Such atmospheres are natural heat engines, converting heat into mechanical
Magnetic Drag on Hot Jupiter Atmospheric Winds
Hot Jupiters, with atmospheric temperatures T 1000 K, have residual thermal ionization levels sufficient for the interaction of ions with the planetary magnetic field to result in a sizable magnetic
Atmospheric Dynamics of Short-Period Extrasolar Gas Giant Planets. I. Dependence of Nightside Temperature on Opacity
More than two dozen short-period Jupiter-mass gas giant planets have been discovered around nearby solar-type stars in recent years, several of which undergo transits, making them ideal for the
