Abstract: Preoperative serum levels of sialyl Lewisa (CA 19-9), sialyl Lewisx (SLX), and sialyl Tn (STN) antigens in colorectal cancer patients were examined to establish predictive factors for serum levels of these antigens compared with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). A total of 308 patients who underwent resection for a colorectal cancer were divided into low and high antigen groups (higher or lower than a selected diagnostic-based cutoff value). The cutoff values were 37 U/ml for CA19-9, 38…
Prognostic Role of Serum Sialyl Lewisx (CD15s) in Colorectal Cancer
TLDR
High serum levels of ganglioside sLex significantly correlate with a favorable prognosis and with a lower occurrence of metastases, suggesting that soluble sLex may compete with membrane-bound sLex in the course of interactions between activated endothelium and tumor cells that have reached the circulation.
Correlation Analysis between Tumorous Associated Antigen Sialyl-Tn Expression and ST6GalNAc I Activity in Human Colon Adenocarcinoma
TLDR
The findings indicated that sTn antigen tissue expression and ST6GalNAc I activity levels were not correlated in CRC, in spite of the overexpression of the antigen in tumorous and transitional tissue.
Clinical Significance of Serum Carcinoembryonic Antigen and Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 Levels Before Surgery and During Postoperative Follow-Up in Colorectal Cancer
TLDR
Recurrence rate, disease-free survival after curative surgery, and prognosis were significantly worse in group A and B patients with high CA19-9 levels, and periodic CA 19-9 determination is useful for monitoring recurrence among group A patients with large numbers ofcolorectal cancer patients.
Expression of CEACAM1 in adenocarcinoma of the lung: a factor of independent prognostic significance.
PURPOSE To evaluate the prognostic relevance of CEACAM1 and sialyl Lewis X expression in adenocarcinomas of the lung. PATIENTS AND METHODS Paraffin wax sections of 93 patients with adenocarcinomas
Expression o f C EACAM1 i n A denocarcinoma o f t he L ung: A F actor o f I ndependent P rognostic S ignificance
TLDR
expression of CEACAM1 was an independent prognostic factor in the patient population and can be used to stratify patients with adenocarcinomas of the lung into low-risk and high-risk groups, which can lead to new therapeutic strategies in the future.
Sialyl-Tn in Cancer: (How) Did We Miss the Target?
TLDR
An irrefutable knowledge is arising from novel immunotherapies targeting other carbohydrate antigens and STn carrier proteins, such as MUC1, that will warrantee the future development of more successful anti-STn immunotherapy strategies.
ST6GalNAc I expression in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells greatly modifies their O-glycosylation pattern and enhances their tumourigenicity.
TLDR
Modifications of the O-glycosylation pattern of a MUC1-related recombinant protein secreted by MDA-MB-231 sialyl-Tn positive cells are reported here to enhance the tumourigenicity of Mda- MB-231 breast cancer cells.
Stable expression of sialyl-Tn antigen in T47-D cells induces a decrease of cell adhesion and an increase of cell migration
TLDR
Observations show that the alteration of the O-glycans pattern is sufficient to modify the biological features of cancer cells, and the generation of new T47-D clones expressing sialyl-Tn antigen after hST6GalNAc I cDNA stable transfection.
Clinicopathology of sialomucin: MUC1, particularly KL-6 mucin, in gastrointestinal, hepatic and pancreatic cancers.
TLDR
The nature of KL-6 mucin is not yet clearly known, but it can be used as a good marker for discriminating cholangiocarcinoma from hepatocellular carcinoma and the characteristics and biological functions of this antigen are expected to be expanded.
Serum sialylation changes in cancer
TLDR
Total serum sialylation levels appear to be increased with various malignancies and show a potential for clinical applications, especially for disease monitoring and prognosis.

Increased expression of sialyl Lewisx antigen correlates with poor survival in patients with colorectal carcinoma: clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study.
TLDR
It is suggested that increased expression of sLex is correlated with the extent of malignancy and high incidence of recurrence and consequently with survival of colorectal carcinoma patients, and may prove to be a potent marker ofRecurrence in coloreCTal carcinomas patients.
Serological studies on CEA, CA 19-9, STn and SLX in colorectal cancer.
TLDR
The combination assay of serum CEA, CA 19-9, STn and SLX will be beneficial for diagnosis and follow-up of colorectal cancer.
Sialyl Tn antigen expression is associated with the prognosis of patients with advanced colorectal cancer.
TLDR
It is concluded that not only lymph node metastasis but also STN expression are important prognostic factors in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma who undergo curative surgical resection.
Clinical Significance of Combined Immunohistochemical Detection of CD44v and Sialyl Lex Expression for Colorectal Cancer Patients Undergoing Curative Resection
TLDR
It is suggested that the combined expression of CD44v8–10 and SLX may be a biologic marker of prognostic significance and emerge as an independent prognostic indicator.
Quantitative and qualitative characterization of human cancer-associated serum glycoprotein antigens expressing fucosyl or sialyl-fucosyl type 2 chain polylactosamine.
TLDR
The serum level of the antigen, defined by monoclonal antibody FH6 (termed sialyl LeX-i since this determinant is carried by i antigen), was significantly high in patients with cancers originating from organs from which adenocarcinomas often develop, as well as among various types of lung cancer.
Immunohistochemical expression of ABH/Lewis-related antigens in primary breast carcinomas and metastatic lymph node lesions.
TLDR
Results suggest a possible relationship between the metastatic behavior of the tumor and expression of the blood group antigens in normal and tumor tissues in patients with primary breast carcinoma.
Sialosyl‐Tn. A novel mucin antigen associated with prognosis in colorectal cancer patients
TLDR
It is concluded that sialosyl‐Tn expression is an independent predictor of poor prognosis in colon cancer, and therefore qualitative mucin alterations may reflect important differences in the biological behavior of these neoplasms.
Expression of Tn, sialosyl-Tn, and T antigens in human colon cancer.
TLDR
Like T antigen, Tn and sialosyl-Tn are oncodevelopmental cancer-associated antigens in the colon and appear to be useful markers of poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas and mucinous carcinomas: two histological subsets that often fail to express other cancer- associated antIGens and that are often associated with a poor clinical outcome.
[Basic and clinical evaluation of an immunoradiometric competitive inhibition assay for sialyl Tn antigen: (1). Evaluation of assay conditions and normal values. STN Study Group].
TLDR
The serum level of the antigen was not affected by menstrual cycle or pregnancy in female, whereas the level of other tumor markers such as CA 125 was highly variable depending upon these conditions.
Current status of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and CEA-S assays in the evaluation of neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract.
TLDR
In contrast to the low but significant evidence of elevated CEA in sera of random normal persons and patients with liver disease or inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract or lung, none of the sera had elevated concentrations of CEA-S.
