Active vitamin D derivatives attenuate the severity of secondary hyperparathyroidism but often increase serum calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) as a result of enhanced intestinal absorption. The calcimimetic cinacalcet HCl lowers parathyroid hormone (PTH) and tends to decrease Ca x P.
