Chronic stress precipitates pronounced enhancement of central stress excitability, marked by sensitization of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis responses and increased adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretagogue biosynthesis in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN).
