Twenty patients with a prosthetic valve (Ionescu-Shiley or Bjork-Shiley) in the aortic position were studied for evidence of intravascular hemolysis. Serum lactic dehydrogenase and serum haptoglobin levels were used as the most sensitive indicators of hemolysis.
