Mitotic and meiotic studies were performed on Allium fistulosum, A. cepa, their F1 hybrid, and ten selected backcross (BC)1 plants [(A. fistulosum x A. cepa) x (A. cepa)]. Each BC1 plant had at least one A. cepa isozyme allele (Pgi, Idh, or Adh). Chromosome morphology and behavior differed among plants. Meiocytes were observed with one, two, or three bridges and/ or fragments, indicating at least three paracentric inversions between A. fistulosum and A. cepa. Unusual crossing over and…
Evidence for nuclear-cytoplasmic incompatibility between Allium fistulosum and A. cepa
TLDR
The data and observations support the hypothesis of nuclear-cytoplasmic incompatibility interactions between the bunching and bulb onion species.
GISH study of advanced generation of the interspecific hybrids between Allium cepa L. and Allium fistulosum L. with relative resistance to downy mildew
TLDR
GISH results point to 2n-gametes formation in macro- and microsporogenesis of the hybrids and the possibility of apomixes events in the backcrossing progeny are discussed.
Central cell nuclear-cytoplasmic incongruity:a mechanism for segregation distortion in advanced backcross and selfed generations of (Allium cepa L. × Allium fistulosum L.) × A. cepa interspecific hybrid derivatives
TLDR
The central cell nuclear-cytoplasmic incongruity hypothesis is presented as an explanation for an anomaly observed in germination and establishment and isozyme segregation patterns in Allium cepa × A. fistulosum F.2BC3</sub] populations generated in an introgression-breeding program.
Meiotic Irregularities in Interspecific Crosses Within Edible Alliums
TLDR
The economically most important edible alliums are onion, Japanese bunching onion, leek, and garlic, and these species are mostly used as condiments, but also have medicinal value.
The use of cytogenetic tools for studies in the crop-to-wild gene transfer scenario
TLDR
A set of cytogenetic techniques appropriate to document the different steps required for the stable introgression of a chromosome segment from a donor species into a recipient species and several examples in hybrids and derivatives are given to illustrate how these approaches may be used to evaluate the potential for gene transfer between crops and wild relatives.
ISSR profiling of Indian cultivars of mulberry (Morus spp.) and its relevance to breeding programs
TLDR
Distribution of cultivars belonging to six different zones on canonical matrix realized from Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) revealed wider variability for West Bengal, Karnataka and Punjab which reaches the group centroids of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
The root systems of onion and Allium fistulosum in the context of organic farming: a breeding approach
TLDR
The results showed the feasibility of breeding for onions with improved root systems using the interspecific hybrid between A. roylei and A. fistulosum as a genetic source and the role this variation could play in organic agriculture.

Electrophoretic analysis of Allium alien addition lines
TLDR
If introgression can be accomplished using an interspecific triploid such as ‘Delta Giant’ to generate fertile alien addition lines and subsequent fertile diploids, this will have accomplished gene flow that has not been possible at the interspecific diploid level.
Pre- and post-fertilization barriers to backcrossing the interspecific hybrid between Allium fistulosum L. and A. cepa L. with A. cepa
TLDR
It was concluded that in the tested interspecific hybrid accessions the attainable gain in viable backcross progeny by the application of in vitro culture techniques is limited by strong pre-fertilization barriers acting at the level of stylar incongruity.
Meiosis in Allium fistulosum, Allium cepa, and their hybrid
TLDR
Investigating the general morphology of several varieties of Allium, including cepa L., Allium fistulosum L., and their hybrids found that material stored for four months and then stained has given better differentiation between chromatin and cytoplasm than material used a few days after fixing.
An interspecific hybrid in Allium
TLDR
The Nebuka, a type of A. fistulosum, was markedly resistant to pinkroot, caused by Phoma terrestris Hansen, and showed no indication of injury when grown continuously for several years in heavily infested soil.
Segregation of isozyme markers and cold tolerance in an interspecific backcross of tomato
TLDR
Heterogeneity between the segregations of subgroups was found at some loci, when the BC1 population was divided into two subgroups according to their physiological age (plastochron index), which indicates selection at the germination/seedling stage may account for some of the skewness.
Analysis of the C-banded karyotype of Allium cepa L. Standard system of nomenclature and polymorphism
TLDR
Although extensive polymorphism in Allium cepa chromosomes is found especially with respect to the size of telomeric bands, the overall similarity of the karyotypes is obvious and the value of C-banding for biosystematics of cultivated plants related to Alliumcepa and for their breeding is suggested.
In situ hybridization confirms jumping nucleolus organizing regions in Allium
TLDR
In situ hybridization with a 125I-rDNA clone from Vicia faba was performed against Allium cepa and three strains of top onion, which represent hybrids between A. cEPa and A. fistulosum, and in principle supports the inference drawn from the Ag-NOR patterns that NORs can jump between terminal heterochromatin blocks of different Allium chromosomes in the parental species.
Onion chromosome nomenclature and homoeology relationships — workshop report
TLDR
Recommendations were formulated for the chromosome nomenclature of species which are cross compatible with onion for the chromosomes of Allium cepa L.
