T HE NAZI-SOVIET PACT, signed in Moscow on 23 August 1939, foreshadowed the catastrophe that would befall Poland one month later: loss of independence and the partition of the state rebuilt only twenty years before. The answer to the question whether the catastrophe could have been avoided depends upon the answer to a second question: why did the Poles not recognize, in time, the threat from the collusion between their neighbours?
