Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPG) are extracellular matrix proteins inhibitory to neurite outgrowth in vitro and correlated with decreased neurite outgrowth after CNS injury. Previously, heparan sulfate proteoglycan and dermatan sulfate proteoglycan have been shown to be associated with senile plaques (SPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) but CSPG was not. In an immunocytochemical study, three monoclonal antibodies to different sulfation states of the chondroitin glycosaminoglycan…

Research report Heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycan /3-amyloid(25-35) neurodegeneration in cultured hippocampal neurons
TLDR
It is found that both HS and CS prevented neurite fragmentation and toxicity normally induced by /325-35, and this data further suggest that different /3-amyloid fragments may induce distinct mechanisms of toxicity in vitro.
Expression of the Chondroitin Sulfate Proteoglycans of Amyloid Precursor (Appican) and Amyloid Precursor‐Like Protein 2
TLDR
The proteoglycan nature of APP and APLP2 suggests that addition of the CS glycosaminoglycan chains is important for the implementation of the biological function of these proteins.
Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans Undergo Differential Expression Alterations in Alzheimer Disease Brains.
TLDR
There would seem to be a relationship between the regulation of core protein expression and the pathological features suggesting HSPGs are potential inducers of the disease.
Proteoglycan-mediated inhibition of A beta proteolysis. A potential cause of senile plaque accumulation.
TLDR
The ability of proteoglycans to bind fibrillar A beta and inhibit its proteolytic degradation suggests a possible mechanism of senile plaque accumulation and persistence in Alzheimer's disease.
Accumulation of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans in the microenvironment of spinal motor neurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis transgenic rats
TLDR
The present results suggest that both the reactive astrocytes and the differential accumulation of CSPGs may create a nonpermissive microenvironment for neural regeneration in neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS.
Inhibition of Chondroitin Sulfate Proteoglycans by APRIL.
TLDR
In vitro methods to evaluate APRIL's ability to block CSPGs from interacting with their partner proteins and promote neuronal growth are described.

Association of heparan sulfate proteoglycan with the neurofibrillary tangles of Alzheimer's disease
TLDR
It is found that basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) binds to heparinase-sensitive sites in NFTs, and HSPG binding may play a role in transforming normal soluble proteins into insoluble PHFs.
Peripheral distribution of dermatan sulfate proteoglycans (decorin) in amyloid-containing plaques and their presence in neurofibrillary tangles of Alzheimer's disease.
TLDR
The unusual distribution of decorin confined to the periphery of amyloid plaques in AD brain suggests that this particular PG may play an important role in the development of the amyloids plaque.
Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan surrounds a subset of human and rat CNS neurons
TLDR
Positivity of neurons was observed in deep cerebellar nuclei, reticular nucleus of the thalamus, and other structures of the midbrain and hindbrain, and in human cortex, suggesting that the proteoglycan (PG) contains mainly COS disaccharjdes.
Basic fibroblast growth factor binding is a marker for extracellular neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer disease.
TLDR
Binding of bFGF is a specific and sensitive morphological method to distinguish intra- from extracellular NFT, which suggests that HSPGs are modified when the NFT becomeextracellular.
A chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan from human cultured glial and glioma cells. Structural and functional properties.
TLDR
A chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan capable of forming large aggregates with hyaluronic acid was identified in cultures of human glial and glioma cells and apparently the major difference between glial/glioma and cartilage chond Detroitin sulphates relates to the glycan rather than to the protein moiety of the molecule.
β-Amyloid of Alzheimer's Disease Induces Reactive Gliosis That Inhibits Axonal Outgrowth
TLDR
It is shown that beta-amyloid peptide when presented as an insoluble substrate which mimics its conformation in vivo can induce cortical glial cells in vitro and in vivo to locally deposit chondroitin sulfate containing proteoglycan.
