Diverse amphiphiles act on cellular cholesterol metabolism as if signaling regulatory sites. One class (oxysterols) mimics the homeostatic effects of excess cell cholesterol, inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis and stimulating plasma membrane cholesterol esterification.
