The response of algal biomass to nutrient reduction is critically evaluated in 16 north temperate lakes by using data from the literature. The analysis confirms that reductions in total phosphorus concentration in the lakes are typically accompanied by consistent declines in chlorophyll. The data also suggest that this response can be expected whether a lake is phosphorus or nitrogen limited, although the magnitude of the response may differ.
