Abstract Cysts of Entamoeba invadens obtained under axenic culture conditions have been reported to be similar to cysts of the human intestinal parasite E histolytica both in morphology and chitin presence in their wails. Mature E. invadens cyst forms, isolated from cultures following discontinuous Percoll gradient sedimentation were resistant (>80%) to detergent treatment. Addition of chitin synthesis inhibitors such as Polyoxin D and Nikkomycin (50 μg/ml) to cultures in encystation media… Expand
Encystation in Entamoeba invadens.
TLDR
The metabolism of cyst-wall polymers is emphasized as a potential target to inhibit cyst formation with specific drugs that would be in principle, harmless to the host. Expand
Chitinase activity in encysting Entamoeba invadens and its inhibition by allosamidin.
TLDR
Comparison of activity between cysts and the total cell population in 48- and 72-h-old encysting cultures suggested that chitinase may start to accumulate in the pre-cyst forms, and like other chit inases, the cyst enzyme preferred nascent over preformed chitIn as substrate. Expand
Identification of chitin as a structural component of Giardia cysts
TLDR
It is shown that chitin is a major structural component of G. lamblia and G. muris cyst walls and the possibility that inhibitors of chit in synthesis may be of use in preventing encystation and thus controlling spread of the disease is raised. Expand
Congo red effect on cyst viability and cell wall structure of encysting. Entamoeba invadens.
TLDR
The results suggest that CR affects E. invadens encystment, alters the cell wall formation, and also affects the cyst viability. Expand
Appearance of sialoglycoproteins in encysting cells of Entamoeba histolytica
TLDR
Amoeba-bacterium cultures of Entamoeba histolytica transferred to a hypoosmotic medium depleted of nutrients changed morphologically and biochemically, and the appearance of two new glycoproteins with apparent molecular sizes of 100 and 150 kilodaltons which contained sIALic acid may indicate a basic role for sialic acid in the encystation of Entimoeba parasites. Chitin synthesis and sheath morphogenesis in Brugia malayi microfilariae.
TLDR
The data suggest that chitin synthesis is critical to microfilarial sheath morphogenesis in this parasitic nematode. Expand
Interactions between Entamoeba histolytica, bacteria and intestinal cells.
TLDR
Interaction of amoeba isolates of low pathogenicity with a variety of gram-negative bacteria significantly increased the ability of the trophozoites to destroy and ingest intestinal epithelial cells and bacteria and prevented the enhancement of virulence. Expand
Effect of nikkomycin on chitin spine formation in the diatom Thalassiosira fluviatilis, and observations on its peptide uptake
The nucleoside antibiotic nikkomycin inhibited the formation of β-chitin spines by the diatom Thalassiosira fluviatilis, and slowed its growth rate, at a minimum inhibitory concentration of 4 μM. TheExpand

TLDR
An understanding of the amoeba's obligatory encystment pathway should provide an approach for interrupting the transmission of this parasite, for which there is currently no vaccine. Expand
Changes in cell surface proteins and glycoproteins during the encystation of Entamoeba invadens.
TLDR
Gel electrophoresis patterns of non-reduced or reduced samples also differed considerably, indicating that a number of proteins are linked by disulphide bonds, and shows that specific glycoproteins are produced during cyst formation. Expand

Identification of the structural component in the cyst wall of Entamoeba invadens.
TLDR
X-ray diffraction analysis of purified cyst walls demonstrated that the crystalline polymer present was chitin, and it was confirmed that the main sugars detected in acid hydrolysates from the walls were hexosamines. Expand
The morphology, formation and development of cysts of Entamoeba.
TLDR
The cyst is an integral and critical phase in the life-cycle of Entamoeba; its attributes directly influence the dissemination of the organism, and are an important aspect in the epidemiology of amoebiasis. Expand
Attachment and ingestion of bacteria by trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica
TLDR
Results indicate that amoebae can attach and ingest bacteria either by using their membrane-associated carbohydrate-binding protein or by having their mannose-containing cell surface components serve as receptors. Expand
Differentiation of Entamoeba: a new medium and optimal conditions for axenic encystation of E. invadens.
TLDR
Experiments established that differentiation did not depend upon changes in the external environment after amebase were transferred to encystation medium and, therefore, was initiated by the shift from growth to enCystation medium. Expand

TLDR
Kinetic studies of the cell free system showed that polyoxin D strongly inhibited the incorporation of N-acetylglucosamine from UDP-GlcNAc into chitin, indicating an inhibition in the UDP- glucosaminyltransferase (chitin synthetase) reaction. Expand

It is concluded that polyoxins have the potential of being used to control the blackspot disease of rapeseed and show strong prophylactic and therapeutic actions on blackspot lesion development on leaves. Expand
A method for determinations of microgram amounts of chitin in arthropod cuticles.
TLDR
The method, adapted from one described for assaying plant material for fungal content, is based on estimating soluble chitosan derivatives and is not affected by the presence of nonchitinous cuticular components. Expand
