Abstract We study the large- N limit of various (SU( N ) gauge theories with chiral fermion content. Assuming that the leading N → ∞ behavior is given by a sum of planar diagrams, we find that the gauge interactions must fail to confine color in some models. Other models, assuming both a planar diagram limit and confinement, must contain massless composite fermions.
