Insect cell expression of the HIV-1 Gag precursor protein by recombinant baculoviruses results in the assembly and budding of noninfectious virus-like particles (VLPs). The VLPs resemble immature virus in ultrastructural morphology and can be purified by conventional retroviral techniques.
