Surgical options for the repair of chest wall deformities were until recently limited to scoliosis and pectus excavatum (PEx). The available operations were cumbersome and the outcomes were far from ideal. As a result there was great reluctance from physicians to recommend surgery to patients (especially those with relatively mild deformities), and reluctance from surgeons to operate on patients with severe deformities because of the associated high risks.
