The US28 gene of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) codes a cell surface receptor for both beta chemokine and fractalkine molecules. This receptor facilitates HCMV-induced cell fusion and virus dissemination and influences susceptibility to infection with other viruses, including the human immunodeficiency virus.
