The objectives of this program were: (1) to develop methods for chemical synthesis of high purity ZnS whiskers, fibers and matrix materials; (2) to use these materials for enhancing the fracture toughness of ZnS ceramics through microstructural control and matrix reinforcement; and (3) to model the infrared optical response of the composite.
