Betanin is the best known natural dye belonging to the betacyanin family. In this work, efficient singlet oxygen quenching by betanin in deuterated water with the rate constant 1.20 ± 0.15 × 10(8) M(-1) s(-1) is reported, deduced from the (1)O2 phosphorescence decays measured as a function of betanin concentration. The quenching occurs by a chemical mechanism, as confirmed by the analysis of the transient absorption kinetics at the probe λ ∼ 535 nm, by comparison of the initial triplet signal…
Singlet Oxygen Phosphorescence as a Probe for Triplet-State Dissolved Organic Matter Reactivity.
TLDR
Light is shed on the fundamental photochemical properties of CDOM in organic matter isolates and whole waters and will help refine photochemical models to more accurately predict pollutant fate in the environment.
Revisiting the Mechanism of Hydrolysis of Betanin
TLDR
It is shown that the decomposition of betanin in aqueous phosphate solution pH 2–11 is subject to general base catalysis by hydrogen phosphate ion and intramolecular general acid and baseCatalysis, providing new insights on the mechanism ofbetanin hydrolysis.
Fluorescence Quenching-Based Mechanism for Determination of Hypochlorite by Coumarin-Derived Sensors
TLDR
The results obtained suggest the applicability of a coumarin-dependent hypochlorite recognition mechanism for the detection of, as well as for quantitative determination of, hypchlorite species in vitro.

Singlet oxygen quenching by anthocyanin's flavylium cations
TLDR
The quenching of singlet molecular oxygen (1O2) by the flavylium cation form of six widespread anthocyanin derivatives was mediated by a charge-transfer mechanism, which was modulated by the total number of –OR substituents that increases the electron-donating ability of these compounds.
New pathways of betanidin and betanin enzymatic oxidation.
TLDR
The products of enzymatic oxidation of betacyanins thus formed are derivatives of 5,6-dihydroxyindole and related structures known as the key intermediates in melanogenesis.
Time-resolved spectroscopy of the singlet excited state of betanin in aqueous and alcoholic solutions.
TLDR
The observed fast light-to-heat conversion in the absence of triplet excited state formation supports the idea that betanin is a photoprotector in vivo.
Singlet Oxygen Reactions with Flavonoids. A Theoretical – Experimental Study
TLDR
Results indicate that all the studied flavonoids are good quenchers of singlet oxygen and could be valuable antioxidants in systems under oxidative stress, in particular if a flavonoid-rich diet was previously consumed.

Generation of singlet oxygen from fragmentation of monoactivated 1,1-dihydroperoxides.
TLDR
It is reported that monoactivated derivatives of 1,1-dihydroperoxides undergo a previously unobserved fragmentation to generate high yields of singlet molecular oxygen ((1)O(2)).
