Essential oil of Satureja hortensis L. was analyzed by GC and GC/MS and tested by a broth micro-well dilution method for activity against multiresistant clinical isolates of pathogenic bacteria from 10 different genera: Klebsiella, Escherichia, Proteus, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Enterococcus, Enterobacter, Citrobacter and Acinetobacter. [...] Key Result The main compounds in the oil were carvacrol (67%), γ-terpinene (15.3%) and p-cymene (6.73%).Expand

Satureja L. Essential Oils in Prevention and Phytotherapy of Salmonella Infection
TLDR
The present study describes the antimicrobial activity of eight Satureja species essential oils against Salmonella enteritidis and recorded that each essential oil, except S. subspicata, in the same concentration had both inhibitory and bactericidal effect (MIC=MBC). Expand
Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activities of Three Satureja Species Against Food-borne Pathogens
TLDR
Considering the wide range of antimicrobial activities of the examined EOs, they might have potential to be used in food industry as a natural preservative agent and to extend the shelf life of products. Expand
Influence of Growth Phase on the Essential Oil Composition and Antimicrobial Activities of Satureja hortensis
TLDR
The variations in quantity and quality of essential oils from the aerial parts of cultivated Satureja hortensis were determined at different stages of harvesting and the EOs exhibited strong antibacterial activities against the tested bacteria. Expand
Antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects of Satureja hortensis essential oil against Escherichia coli and Salmonella isolated from poultry
TLDR
Summer savory essential oil showed the growth inhibition and bactericidal activity against E. coli and Salmonella and demonstrated anti-biofilm activity of S. hortensis essential against both tested bacteria. Expand
A comparative study on the biological activity of essential oil and total hydro-alcoholic extract of Satureja hortensis L.
TLDR
VO showed greater efficacy than TE on both tumor cell lines and melanoma cell lines, and the activity of the compounds was higher when low concentrations were used while at high concentrations the percentages of viability were increased. Expand
Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Potential of Satureja hortensis L. in Fresh Cow Cheese
This study presents data about the chemical composition and antimicrobial effect of Satureja hortensis L. used as both dry plant and essential oil, on fresh cow’s cheese, in order to extend itsExpand
Antimicrobial activity and total content of polyphenols of Rheum L. species growing in Poland
TLDR
The moderate in vitro antibacterial activity of R. undulatum suggests that this plant, often used in the European cuisine to improve flavour, may be also important and useful as an alternative or auxiliary medicine remedy in the treatment of uncomplicated superficial infections caused especially by clinically important staphylococci, potentially pathogenic S. aureus or opportunistic S. epidermidis. Expand
Chemical composition, antimicrobial, antioxidative and anticholinesterase activity of Satureja Montana L. ssp montana essential oil
The present study investigates the chemical compositions of three Satureja montana L. ssp montana essential oils and correlates chemical variability with biological activities. GC/MS analysis showedExpand

Evaluation of antimicrobial activities of Satureja hortensis L.
TLDR
The results showed that hexane extract of Satureja hortensis had no antifungal, but antibacterial activity against four strains of three Bacillus species whereas methanol extract had both anticandidal and antibacterial effects. Expand
Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of Foeniculum vulgare and Crithmum maritimum essential oils.
TLDR
Oils from the two samples of F. vulgare showed a higher and broader degree of inhibition than that of C. maritimum, and demonstrated antioxidant capacities, comparable in some cases to that of alpha-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), used as reference antioxidants. Expand
Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Rosmarinus officinalis L. oils from Sardinia and Corsica
A detailed analysis of Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil from Sardinia and Corsica (α-pinene/verbenone/bornyl acetate chemotype) was carried out using GC–RI, GC–MS and 13C-NMR, on the bulkExpand
Control of Aspergillus flavus with essential oil and methanol extract of Satureja hortensis.
TLDR
The results in this study showed that the essential oil of S. hortensis had strong antifungal activity against pathogen fungi tested, which could be used for management of this pathogen as a potential source of sustainable eco-friendly botanical fungicides. Expand
Inhibitory effects of Satureja hortensis L. essential oil on growth and aflatoxin production by Aspergillus parasiticus.
TLDR
Carvacrol and thymol are found to be the effective constituents of S. hortensis L. as strong inhibition of aflatoxin production by A. parasiticus and may be useful to control a flatoxin contamination of susceptible crops in the field. Expand
Bioactivity of Backhousia citriodora: antibacterial and antifungal activity.
TLDR
essential oils was found to be greater than that of citral alone and often superior to Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil, which has potential as an antiseptic or surface disinfectant or for inclusion in foods as a natural antimicrobial agent. Expand
Susceptibility of methicillin-resistant staphylococci to oregano essential oil, carvacrol and thymol.
TLDR
The results clearly demonstrated that the comparison between the susceptibility of MSS and MRS to oregano oil, carvacrol and thymol showed no significant differences (Fisher's exact test, P > 0.05). Expand
In vitro antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities of the essential oil and methanol extracts of herbal parts and callus cultures of Satureja hortensis L.
TLDR
The antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil, obtained by using a Clevenger distillation apparatus, water soluble and water insoluble subfraction of the methanol extracts from aerial parts of Satureja hortensis L.hortensis, showed great potential antimicrobial activities against all 23 bacteria and 15 fungi and yeast species tested.
