Hyphal-wall preparations of Aspergillus fumigatus have been analysed by sequential treatment with KOH, nitrous acid and again with KOH. By acidification of the alkali-soluble extract, a polyglucose was precipitated which showed an X-ray diffraction pattern similar to that of (1-->3)-alpha-glucan. The remainder of the alkali-soluble fraction was precipitated with ethanol; it contained all the mannose, galactose and protein of the wall and, in addition, 6.2% of the amino sugars. This wall… Expand
Cell wall protein and glycoprotein constituents of Aspergillus fumigatus that bind to polystyrene may be responsible for the cell surface hydrophobicity of the mycelium.
TLDR
The ability to bind to polystyrene particles exhibited by several protein and glycoprotein species released by beta ME treatment suggested that these cell wall moieties possess exposed hydrophobic domains that could be responsible for the CSH of mycelium. Expand
Analysis of peptidogalactomannans from the mycelial surface of Aspergillus fumigatus.
Peptidogalactomannans (pGMs) from mycelium of two strains of Aspergillus fumigatus were fractionated by Cetavlon precipitation and size exclusion chromatography and their carbohydrate structuresExpand
The solubilization and biological activities of Aspergillusβ-(1ₒ3)-d-glucan
TLDR
ASBG showed limulus activity similar to Candida solubilized β-glucan (CSBG), and there was little difference in the activity of ASBG between various Aspergillus spp. Expand
An extracellular beta-galactofuranosidase from Aspergillus niger and its use as a tool for glycoconjugate analysis.
TLDR
Results are presented to show that this beta-galactofuranosidase could be employed as a useful tool for the analysis of glycoconjugates containing biologically important Galf components. Expand
Differences in sialic acid density in pathogenic and non-pathogenic Aspergillus species.
TLDR
Sialic acid biosynthesis was shown to be regulated by nutrient composition: the density of sialic acids on the surface of conidia grown in minimal media was lower than that observed when conidia were grown on rich, complex media. Expand
Purification and characterization of an endo-1,3-beta-glucanase from Aspergillus fumigatus.
TLDR
The association of the present endo-1,3-beta-glucanase with the cell wall of A. fumigatus suggests a putative role for this enzyme during cell-wall morphogenesis, using a sensitive colorimetric assay and high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with a pulsed electrochemical detector for product analysis. The cell wall of Fusarium oxysporum.
Sugar analysis of isolated cell walls from three formae speciales of Fusarium oxysporum showed that they contained not only glucose and (N-acetyl)-glucosamine, but also mannose, galactose, and uronicExpand
Streptomyces lunalinharesii spores contain chitin on the outer sheath.
TLDR
Chitin from Streptomyces lunalinharesii spores, detected on its outermost surface layer, was isolated and characterized by chemical and spectroscopic methods, transmission electron microscopy and flow cytometry analysis, marking the first detailed characterization of chitin on the spore's outermost layer from a StrePTomyces species. Influence of essential oil of Hyssopus officinalis on the chemical composition of the walls of Aspergillus fumigatus (Fresenius)
The cell walls of the growing hyphae of Aspergillus fumigatus (Fresenius) cultured in the presence or absence of the essential oil of Hyssopus officinalis were isolated and their chemical compositionExpand
Trichomonas vaginalis and Tritrichomonas foetus: expression of chitin at the cell surface.
The expression of chitin as a structural component of Trichomonas vaginalis and Tritrichomonas foetus was demonstrated by using enzymatic hydrolysis by recombinant (rec-) chitinase, chemicalExpand

Structural analysis of water-soluble fractions obtained fromAspergillus fumigatus mycelium
TLDR
C-NMR spectroscopy of fractions prepared from the water-soluble components of Aspergillus fumigatus mycelium indicated the presence of glycoproteins, the polysaccharide components of which contained β-d-Galf units that are part of structures chemically different from those obtained by alkali treatment. Chemical composition of the yeast ascospore wall. The second outer layer consists of chitosan.
TLDR
The presence of dityrosine in the outer layers of yeast ascospore walls is reported, and it is concluded that it is localized in the second outer layer of the spore wall. Expand

TLDR
Melanin appears to be a finite heteropolymer both in terms of its molecular size and its chemistry, and this result does not substantiate earlier views that indolic melanins are peculiar to the animal kingdom. Expand

2-O-methyl-D-mannose residues are immunodominant in extracellular polysaccharides of Mucor racemosus and related molds.
TLDR
The structure of the immunodominant carbohydrate epitope of the extracellular polysaccharides from mold species belonging to the order Mucorales reactive with rabbit IgG antibodies was elucidated and chains composed of a single terminal non-reducing 2-O-methyl-D-mannose residue, alpha (1-2)-linked to a short sequence of alpha(1- 2)-linked D-mannOSE residues were concluded. TLDR
The hyphal wall of D. bryoniae is highly resistant to enzymic degradation and may be due to both the presence of highly crystalline chitin and (1−> 3)-β-glucan. Expand
