In this article we investigate charged particles in gauge theories. After reviewing the physical and theoretical problems, a method to construct charged particles is presented. Explicit solutions are found in the abelian theory and a physical interpretation is given. These solutions and our interpretation of these variables as the true degrees of freedom for charged particles, are then tested in the perturbative domain and are demonstrated to yield infra-red finite, on-shell Green’s functions…

Charges from Dressed Matter: Physics and Renormalisation

Abstract Gauge theories are characterised by long range interactions. Neglecting these interactions at large times and identifying the Lagrangian matter fields with the asymptotic physical fields

Charges from Dressed Matter: Construction

Abstract There is a widespread belief in particle physics that there is no relativistic description of a charged particle. This is claimed to be due to persistent, long range interactions which

Gauge invariant Green's functions for the bosonic sector of the standard model

There are many applications in gauge theories where the usually employed framework involving gauge-dependent Green's functions leads to considerable problems. In order to overcome the difficulties

Asymptotic dynamics in quantum field theory

A crucial element of scattering theory and the LSZ reduction formula is the assumption that the coupling vanishes at large times. This is known not to hold for the theories of the Standard Model and

Colour Charges and Anti-Screening

If constituent quarks are to emerge from QCD they must have well defined colour and be energetically favoured. After reviewing the general properties of charges in gauge theories, a method for

Non-perturbative gauge transformations of arbitrary fermion correlation functions in quantum electrodynamics

We study the transformation of the dressed electron propagator and the general $N$-point functions under a change in the covariant gauge of internal photon propagators. We re-establish the well known

Charges, Monopoles and Gauge Invariance

A systematic approach to the description of gauge invariant charges is presented and applied to the construction of both the static colour charge configuration in QCD and the monopole solution in

Study of a Model of Quantum Electrodynamics

This paper studies the model of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) of a single nonrelativistic electron due to W. Pauli and M. Fierz and studied further by P. Blanchard. This model exhibits infrared

INVARIANT STRUCTURES IN GAUGE THEORIES AND CONFINEMENT

The problem of finding all gauge invariants is considered in connection with the problem of confinement. Polylocal gauge tensors are introduced and studied. It is shown (both in physical and pure
