Fullerenes have attracted interest for their possible applications in various electronic, biological, and optoelectronic devices. However, for efficient use in such devices, a suitable anchoring group has to be employed that forms well-defined and stable contacts with the electrodes. In this work, we propose a novel fullerene tetramalonate derivate functionalized with trans-1 4,5-diazafluorene anchoring groups. The conductance of single-molecule junctions, investigated in two different setups…

Fullerene-based anchoring groups for molecular electronics.

TLDR
Using lithographic mechanically controllable break junctions in vacuum, the conductance and stability of single-molecule junctions of 1,4-bis(fullero[c]pyrrolidin-1-yl)benzene are determined and statistical analyses of the breaking of the junctions confirm the stability of the fullerene-gold bond.

TLDR
A combined experimental and theoretical study is presented revealing the influence of metal-molecule coupling on electronic transport through single-Molecule junctions by fitting the experimental current-voltage characteristics to a single-level tunneling model.

TLDR
A systematic investigation of the anchoring group effect on single molecule junction conductance by employing two complementary techniques, namely scanning tunneling microscopy break junction and mechanically controllable break junction techniques, based on the studies published in the literature and important results from work.

Reduction-induced switching of single-molecule conductance of fullerene derivatives.

The effect of electrochemical reduction on the single-molecule conductance of fullerene C60 derivatives was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. Three types of C60 derivatives were synthesized,

TLDR
The results demonstrate highy efficient contacts between Au and C(60), despite of deposition from solution, as well as weak molecule-metal coupling and symmetry breaking.

Charge transport in C60-based dumbbell-type molecules: mechanically induced switching between two distinct conductance states.

TLDR
It is shown that buckminsterfullerene-capped symmetric fluorene-based dumbbell-type compound 1 is able to form highly organized defect-free surface adlayers, allowing the molecules on the surface to be addressed specifically.

Electrical properties and mechanical stability of anchoring groups for single-molecule electronics

TLDR
From conductance histograms, it is found that thiol anchored molecules provide the highest conductance; a single-level model fit to current–voltage characteristics suggests that SAc groups exhibit a higher electronic coupling to the electrodes, together with better level alignment than the other three groups.
