We have measured the reaction rates of trapped, buffer gas cooled Th{sup 3+} and various gases and have analyzed the reaction products using trapped ion mass spectrometry techniques. Ion trap lifetimes are usually limited by reactions with background molecules, and the high electron affinity of multiply charged ions such as Th{sup 3+} make them more prone to loss. Our results show that reactions of Th{sup 3+} with carbon dioxide, methane, and oxygen all occur near the classical Langevin rate…

Ion-neutral chemistry at ultralow energies: dynamics of reactive collisions between laser-cooled Ca+ ions and Rb atoms in an ion-atom hybrid trap †

Cold chemical reactions between laser-cooled Ca+ ions and Rb atoms were studied in an ion-atom hybrid trap. Reaction rate constants were determined in the range of collision energies ⟨E coll⟩/k B=20

Multisectional Linear Ion Trap and Novel Loading Method for Optical Spectroscopy of Electron and Nuclear Transitions

The preliminary results presented show that the proposed instrument and methods allow one to produce effectively up to triply charged thorium ions as well as to trap ions for future spectroscopic study.

Measuring the Energy of 229Th Isomer Decay

Ions injected into a multipole RF trap (where they are neutralized in charge-exchange reactions) are proposed to be used to determine the energy of electrons from the decay of the 229Th isomer. A

Nuclear clocks for testing fundamental physics

The low-energy, long-lived isomer in 229Th, first studied in the 1970s as an exotic feature in nuclear physics, continues to inspire a multidisciplinary community of physicists. It has stimulated

The $$^{229}$$Th isomer: prospects for a nuclear optical clock

The proposal for the development of a nuclear optical clock has triggered a multitude of experimental and theoretical studies. In particular the prediction of an unprecedented systematic frequency

The History of \(^{229\mathrm {m}}\)Th

This chapter provides a complete review of theoretical and experimental investigations on \(^{229\text {m}}\)Th. It was a central aspect to also give a rather complete list of existing literature on
