In order to study the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies we develop an automated pipeline to estimate the optical continuum of quasars and detect intervening metal absorption line systemswith amatched kernel convolution technique and adaptive S/N criteria. We process ∼ one million quasars in the latest Data Release 16 (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and compile a large sample of ∼ 160,000 Mg ii absorbers, together with ∼ 70,000 Fe ii systems, in the redshift range 0.35 < zabs…

Kinematics of Mg ii absorbers from the redshift-space distortion around massive quiescent galaxies
- Physics

The kinematics of MgII absorbers is the key to understanding the origin of cool, metalenriched gas clouds in the circumgalactic medium of massive quiescent galaxies. Exploiting the fact that the…
How are Lyα Absorbers in the Cosmic Web Related to Gas-rich Galaxies?
- PhysicsThe Astrophysical Journal
- 2022
We present the correlation between Lyα absorbers and H i galaxies in the nearby universe (0.01 ≤ z ≤ 0.057). We find that Lyα absorbers are strongly correlated to H i galaxies at a projected…
Quenched fractions in the IllustrisTNG simulations: comparison with observations and other theoretical models
- PhysicsMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We make an in-depth comparison of the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations with observed quenched fractions of central and satellite galaxies, for Mstars = 109–12 M⊙ at 0 ≤ z ≤ 3. We show how…

The Circumgalactic Medium of eBOSS Emission Line Galaxies: Signatures of Galactic Outflows in Gas Distribution and Kinematics
- PhysicsThe Astrophysical Journal
- 2018
We study the distribution and kinematics of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) of emission line galaxies (ELGs) traced by metal absorption lines. Using about 200,000 ELGs from SDSS-IV eBOSS and…

We explore the distribution of cool (∼104 K) gas around galaxies and its dependence on galaxy properties. By cross-correlating about 50,000 Mg ii absorbers with millions of sources from the SDSS…

Using a sample of nearly 700 quasars with strong [W0(2796) > 0.8 Å] Mg II absorption lines detected in the Early Data Release of the SDSS, we demonstrate the feasibility of measuring the photometric…
