Most of the tannin in seeds of high-tannin bird-resistant group III sorghums [Sorghum bicolor] extracts readily into methanol or aqueous acetone. In contrast, tannin of group II sorghums is not extracted by these solvents but is extracted by methanol containing 1% (v/v) HCl. Group II sorghums have been reported to be nutritionally less harmful than group III types, presumably due to differences in their tannins.
