Measurements of metallothioneins (MTs) can be labour intensive and require expensive probes and or analytical instrumentation. In contrast, the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR0 has provided a relatively sensitive and simple mechanism to measure expression of MT in sentinel species in aquatic environments.
