Staphylococcus aureus 462 is one of three bacteriocin-producing strains selected for study from 200 isolates of staphylococci of animal origin. These bacteriocins are specific in their activity, inhibiting the growth of certain strains of S. aureus and other gram-positive species, but not gram-negative organisms. Staphylococcin 462 was not found in significant concentrations in the supernatant fluid of broth cultures, nor was it released into the suspending liquid when the cells were…
Production, purification, and properties of a bacteriocin from Staphylococcus aureus isolated from saliva
An analysis of the inhibitory spectrum among typical oral indigenous bacteria showed that Streptococcus salivarius, Propionibacterium acnes, Corynebacterium parvulum, and Actinomyces israelii were susceptible to the bacteriocin, which had a bactericidal effect on susceptible cells.
Staphylococcosis of turkeys. 4. Characterization of a bacteriocin produced by an interfering Staphylococcus.
A Staphylococcus epidermidis isolate designated strain 115, which is used as an interfering agent against staphylococcosis of turkeys, produces a bacteriocin that was partially purified and
Bacteriocin of a Group B Streptococcus: Partial Purification and Characterization
The production of bacteriocin-like inhibition by two of 135 strains of group B streptococci was demonstrated during the growth of these organisms on solid nutrient media. Although a variety of
Isolation and mode of action of a staphylococcin-like substance active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Screening of non-phage group II Staphylococcus aureus strains for antagonistic substances revealed one particular strain, S. aureus D91, to excrete a substance with a wide spectrum of activity; both
Viridins, Bacteriocins of Alpha-Hemolytic Streptococci: Isolation, Characterization, and Partial Purification
Viridin B was bactericidal to a Neisseria sicca strain, it was only bacteriostatic against a coagulase-negative staphylococcus, and had some unusual properties including heat lability, a narrow pH range of activity, and lack of adsorptive capacity to susceptible bacteria.
Purification and characterization of a bacteriocin from Bacteroides fragilis
The activity of the purified bacteriocin was not affected by RNase, DNase, phospholipase A, pancreatic lipase, or dextranase, but was destroyed by trypsin, proteinase K, heat, or a pH below 5 or above 8.
Purification, Properties, and Cytotoxic Effect of a Bacteriocin from Mycobacterium smegmatis
The lethal effect of the bacteriocin was demonstrated by the decrease in viable counts of the microbial indicator strain, M. diernhoferi ATCC 19340, which inhibited the growth of HeLa-S3 cells.
Production, purification and chemical properties of an antistaphylococcal agent produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis.
An antibacterial agent produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis strain 5 was isolated from culture supernatants; its spectrum of activity is restricted to staphylitis and micrococci and it was relatively heat-stable.

Characterization of a Staphylococcus aureus Bacteriocin
Staphylococcin (414) is not a lytic enzyme like lysostaphin and does not have the same spectrum of activity, but like other bacteriocins from gram-positive microorganisms does not inhibit any gram-negative bacteria, but does inhibit several other genera.
A new method of preservation on porous porcelain beads over anhydrous silica gel or calcium sulfate is described here, which has the advantage of requiring little specialized equipment and results in a preparation that can be sampled at different times.
