  • In the peripheral nervous system, progesterone (PROG) has a stimulatory effect on myelination. It could be derived from local synthesis, as Schwann cells in culture express the 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) and convert pregnenolone (PREG) to PROG.
