Modification of the type I polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase of Ralstonia eutropha (PhaC(Re)) was performed through systematic in vitro evolution in order to obtain improved PhaC(Re) having an enhanced activity of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) synthesis in recombinant Escherichia coli.
