Characteristics of dissociable human learning systems

Abstract A number of ways of taxonomizing human learning have been proposed. We examine the evidence for one such proposal, namely, that there exist independent explicit and implicit learning systems. This combines two further distinctions, (1) between learning that takes place with versus without concurrent awareness, and (2) between learning that involves the encoding of instances (or fragments) versus the induction of abstract rules or hypotheses. Implicit learning is assumed to involve…

It is concluded that unconscious learning has not been satisfactorily established in any of these areas and the distinction between instance and rule learning is a sound and meaningful way of taxonomizing human learning.
The Development of Explicit Rule-learning Two Dissociable Human Learning Systems

Implicit and explicit learning were originally distinguished in terms of accessibility to verbal report. We identify evidence for the proposal that the im-plicit/explicit contrast corresponds to a…
Auditory implicit learning

The research in this thesis investigates systematically whether implicit learning of sound stimuli behaves any differently to such learning of visual stimuli, and puts into question that implicit learning is a fundamental process, which involves implicit rule abstraction.

This study examines the generalizability of claims by Reber (1989, 1993) about the implicit learning of artificial grammars to the context of adult second language acquisition (SLA). In the field of…

The dependence of implicit learning on particular brain areas is discussed, some conclusions are drawn for modeling implicit learning, and the interaction of implicit and explicit learning is considered.
Conscious versus unconscious learning of structure
- Psychology
- 2012
The ways we come to learn about the structure of complex environments is intimately linked to the conscious-unconscious distinction. Indeed, Reber (1967, 1989) argued that we could acquire…
A Single Paradigm for Implicit and Statistical Learning
- Linguistics, Computer ScienceTop. Cogn. Sci.
- 2019
It is shown that both grammar and vocabulary are promoted by explicit information about the language structure, that awareness of structure affects acquisition during learning, and awareness precedes learning, but is not distinctive at the endpoint of learning.
The Metacognitive Role of Familiarity in Artificial Grammar Learning: Transitions from Unconscious to Conscious Knowledge
- Psychology
- 2010
We present two methods by which people could learn (e.g., artificial grammars): learning by a single updating model that has the function to reflect how reality is (e.g., the standard types of…

This study examined two possible bases for grammatical judgments following syntactical learning: unconscious representations of a formal grammar, as in Reber's (1976) hypothesis of implicit learning,…
