Fulldome planetarium projection systems present a unique technical challenge. This includes the way light propagates in the largest optical element of a planetarium: The dome itself. In an ideal world, one would aim for a projection system with high luminance and high contrast. However, effects such as cross-reflection occur in reality, compromising the projection quality. In previously published studies, the interaction of dome reflectivity, projector parameters, projection luminance and…

Inter-reflection Compensation of Immersive Projection Display by Spatio-Temporal Screen Reflectance Modulation

A computational model is proposed to optimize a reflectance pattern for the accurate reproduction of a target appearance by decreasing the intensity elevation caused by inter-reflection while maintaining the maximum intensity of the target appearance.

An immersive projection display with dynamic reflectance control using photochromism

An immersive projection display with dynamic reflectance control using photochromism is proposed and it is shown that the projected result is closer to the target appearance by the proposed method than by conventional techniques.

Compensating Indirect Scattering for Immersive and Semi-Immersive Projection Displays

We present a real-time reverse radiosity method for compensating indirect scattering effects that occur with immersive and semi-immersive projection displays. It computes a numerical solution

Large-Scale Immersive Displays in Entertainment and Education

Large-scale immersive displays have an established history in planetaria and large-format film theaters. Video-based immersive theaters are now emerging, and promise to revolutionize group
