This article attempts to describe the key morphological innovations associated with the evolutionary transitions between bacteriotrophy, eukaryotrophy, phototrophy, and osmotrophy in euglenids. Attention was focused on heterotrophic euglenids in an effort to establish a robust phylogenetic hypothesis for the group as a whole.
