Anemia is a common sequela of chronic kidney disease (CKD). As GFR declines, the risk of anemia increases, particularly when the GFR is 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2.1 Anemia is also common in the geriatric population, with a prevalence of 10% in patients greater than 65 yr old (Figure 1).2 This poses a significant challenge in the diagnosis and management of elderly patients with anemia who have concurrent CKD.
