We model Lagrangian lateral mixing and transport of passive scalars in meandering oceanic jet currents by two-dimensional advection equations with a kinematic streamfunction with a time-dependent amplitude of a meander imposed. The advection in such a model is known to be chaotic in a wide range of the meander’s characteristics. We study chaotic transport in a stochastic layer and show that it is anomalous. The geometry of mixing is examined and shown to be fractal-like. The scattering… Expand

Propagation of perturbations and meandering in a free surface shallow water jet
A shallow water free-surface turbulent jet is investigated at Froude numbers variable between about 0.15 and 0.6 and a Reynolds number equal to 5000, with a jet height-to-width aspect ratio variableExpand

Hamiltonian fractals and chaotic scattering of passive particles by a topographical vortex and an alternating current
Abstract We investigate the dynamics of passive particles in a two-dimensional incompressible open flow composed of a fixed topographical point vortex and a background current with a periodicExpand
Chaotic scattering, transport, and fractals in a simple hydrodynamic flow
Advection of passive tracers in an unsteady hydrodynamic flow consisting of a background stream and a vortex is analyzed as an example of chaotic particle scattering and transport. A numericalExpand
Observation of anomalous diffusion and Lévy flights in a two-dimensional rotating flow.
Chaotic transport in a laminar fluid flow in a rotating annulus is studied experimentally by tracking large numbers of tracer particles for long times by studying the behaviour of Levy flights and anomalous diffusion. Expand
Chaotic mixing and transport in Rossby-wave critical layers
A simple, dynamically consistent model of mixing and transport in Rossby-wave critical layers is obtained from the well-known Stewartson–Warn–Warn (SWW) solution of Rossby-wave critical-layer theory.Expand
Chaotic transport by Rossby waves in shear flow
Transport and mixing properties of Rossby waves in shear flow are studied using tools from Hamiltonian chaos theory. The destruction of barriers to transport is studied analytically, by using theExpand
Fluid Exchange across a Meandering Jet Quasiperiodic Variability
In this paper, the motion of fluid parcels in the two-dimensional kinematic model of a meandering jet developed by Bower and Samelson is studied. The earlier work is extended by consideringExpand

It is pointed out that quite simple waves may cause the fluid elements through which they pass to execute complex or chaotic motions leading to enhanced mixing and long-range transport. Expand
A Simple Kinematic Mechanism for Mixing Fluid Parcels across a Meandering Jet

Laboratory model of a planetary eastward jet
The concentration of eastward planetary currents into strong wavy jets is a major feature of the atmospheric general circulation (for example, the jet stream) and of oceanic currents (for example,Expand
