During the past two decades, the number of diabetic patients requiring vitrectomy for nonresolving vitreous hemorrhage has decreased four-fold, whereas there has been a substantial increase in diabetic patients with traction and combined traction/rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) requiring surgery.
