This article lists the changes to virus taxonomy approved and ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses in February 2018. A total of 451 species, 69 genera, 11 subfamilies, 9 families and one new order were added to the taxonomy. The current totals at each taxonomic level now stand at 9 orders, 131 families, 46 subfamilies, 803 genera and 4853 species. A change was made to the International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature to allow the use of the names of… Expand

TLDR
A new, expanded virus classification scheme with 15 ranks that closely aligns with the Linnaean taxonomic system and better encompasses viral diversity is described. Expand

TLDR
This chapter briefly summarizes the status quo of filovirus classification and focuses on the importance of differentiating between filoviral species and filoviruses and the correct use of taxonomic and vernacular filov virus names and abbreviations in written and oral discourse. Expand
Binomial nomenclature for virus species: a long view.

TLDR
The ICTV should support the time-honoured convention that LBs are only used with biological (phylogenetic) classifications, and leave the ICTV Taxonomy and its Code uncoordinated, and its aims and audience uncertain. Expand
Plant virus taxonomy
TLDR
The current totals at each taxonomic level now stand at 9 orders, 131 families, 46 subfamilies, 803 genera, and 4853 species, approved and ratified by the ICTV in February 2018. Expand
Virion Structure, Genome Organization, and Taxonomy of Viruses
TLDR
The diversity in virus structure, genome organization, and features of virus replication in cells or organisms they infect are reviewed; essentially the ways viruses have become conspicuously present in the authors' lives and how to organize and make sense of their diversity are examined. Expand
Virus classification – where do you draw the line?
TLDR
Analysis of sequences by GRAViTy provides evidence that family (and genus) assignments of currently classified viruses are largely underpinned by genomic relatedness, and these features could serve as a guide towards an evidence-based classification of metagenomic viruses in the future. Expand
On Classification and Taxonomy of Coronaviruses (Riboviria, Nidovirales, Coronaviridae) with Special Focus on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Related Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
TLDR
This study is the first that produced phylogenies based on all 39 species of Coronaviridae recognized by the Coronviridae Study Group and International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses and has, uniquely, used several methods of cladistic analysis in combination with the Maximum Likelihood method. Expand
Taxonomy of the order Mononegavirales: update 2019
TLDR
The updated taxonomy of the order Mononegavirales is presented as now accepted by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). Expand
Partial RdRp sequences offer a robust method for Coronavirus subgenus classification
TLDR
It is proposed that partial RdRp sequence data of coronaviruses is sufficient for the attribution of subgenus-level taxonomic classifications and the R package, ‘MyCoV’, is supplied, which provides a method for attributing sub genus and assessing the reliability of the attribution. Expand
2020 taxonomic update for phylum Negarnaviricota (Riboviria: Orthornavirae), including the large orders Bunyavirales and Mononegavirales.
TLDR
The updated taxonomy of Negarnaviricota is presented, as now accepted by the ICTV, after the phylum was amended and emended in March 2020. Expand

Origins and Evolution of the Global RNA Virome
TLDR
A detailed phylogenomic reconstruction of the evolution of the dramatically expanded global RNA virome reveals the relationships between different Baltimore classes of viruses and indicates extensive transfer of viruses between distantly related hosts, such as plants and animals. Expand
