Effects of Diuretics on the Renal Handling of Magnesium
- MedicineDrugs
- 2012
A dose-response relationship has been established for the effect of amiloride in reducing fractional excretion of magnesium and potassium during frusemide diuresis in rats, and further studies are required to establish the precise mechanism(s) involved in the drug's magnesium-sparing properties.

It is suggested that aldosterone increases the clearance and excretion of magnesium and potassium in a parallel manner in patients with primary aldosteronism and in an adrenalectomized subject.

Aldosterone when given to adrenalectomized dogs did not alter proximal Na reabsorption, as this can be estimated by stop flow data, and adrenalectomy reduces maximal Na concentration gradient which can be maintained across distal tubular cells.

- BiologyNephron

It is concluded that tubular secretion of magnesium does not occur in the rat under these condition, even during sulfate infusion, when a distal secretory peak of potassium occurred.
