During adaptation to brackish water the young great sturgeon Huso huso is able to regulate its serum osmolarity and ion concentrations. After transfer from fresh water to brackish water the ion concentrations in the urine increase and the urine becomes isoosmotic to the blood serum after 24h. The Na+ and K+ concentrations in the urine increase during the first 12 h by 4.4 and 7.7 times, respectively, later decreasing again. The Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations in the urine increase by 3.4 and 14…

The effect of size on osmoregulation ability, chloride cells and Na+, K+-ATPase activity in Salmo caspius Kessler, 1877 juveniles

The results show that under the salinity condition of the Caspian Sea, juvenile fish (≈10g) are able to survive and adjust functions of their organs and increase in body size shows positive feedbacks thus release of Caspia trout juvenile at this weight for stock rehabilitation or future cage culture is feasible and exerts no negative impact on fish.

Investigation osmoregulation of system of the Persian sturgeon released in the Gorgan River

Investigation osmoregulation of system of the Persian sturgeon released in the Gorgan Abstract: In this study, circumstances of osmoregulation system of the Persian sturgeon released in the Gorgan

A histological study of the kidney structure of Van fish (Alburnus tarichi) acclimated to highly alkaline water and freshwater

It is clearly demonstrate that histologic and immunochemical changes take place in the kidney of the Van fish acclimated to the different physicochemical characteristics of alkaline and freshwater environments.

Mechanisms of seawater acclimation in a primitive, anadromous fish, the green sturgeon

Green sturgeon osmo- and ionoregulate with similar mechanisms to more-derived teleosts, indicating the importance of these mechanisms during the evolution of fishes, although salinity acclimation may be more dependent on body size.

Changes in serum biochemical parameters of Acipenser sinensis, Gray 1835, caused by decreasing environmental salinity

It may be energetically costly for osmoregulatory processes to return to normal in Chinese sturgeon, due to metabolic and nutrient related functions taking much longer to recover.

The process of kidney gradual changes in, Tenualosa ilisha during migration from sea to the river

In order to study kidney changes in, Tenualosa ilisha during migration from sea to the river, twenty mature T. ilisha specimens were collected from the Persian Gulf (42.7ppt salinity and 29.27°C

Initial salinity tolerance and ion-osmotic parameters in juvenile Russian Sturgeon, Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, Brandt, 1833

The salinity tolerance, hematological and hydromineral regulation capabilities of juvenile Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) were investigated in different ages and sizes in freshwater

Ionic, Osmotic, and Nitrogenous Waste Regulation

Investigation of blood serum osmo- and ion-regulation of mature and reared juvenile Acipenser persicus

The Pearson’s correlation coefficient and regression equations indicated that Mg ++ and Na + are among the effective ions to influence the blood serum osmotic pressure in A. persicus in brackish water and fresh water, respectively.

Urine composition and kidney tubular function in southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma, in seawater.

The urine of southern flounder in seawater occasionally became slightly hyperosmotic to the blood for a brief interval after operative procedures, and the average percentage filterabilities of the plasma electrolytes, determined by centrifugal filtration rate, were higher than expected.

Aspects of Osmotic and Ionic Regulation in the Sturgeon

The rate of turnover of sodium is much lower in fresh water but adaptation to fresh water is slow and the animals are more permeable to sodium than are teleosts, which is similar to that ofteleosts of a similar size.

Osmoregulation in juvenile and adult white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus

The young adult fish are able to tolerate higher salinities (35 ppt) than juvenile sturgeon but probably are also characterized by low activity of the necessary ion exchange mechanisms in the gills which permit rapid adjustment of blood electrolytes with graduate change in external salinity.

Ultrastructure and functions of the cells of proximal and distal segments of the nephron of anadromous and freshwater fishes

Experiments with MgCl2 injection showed that the Salmonidae nephrons kidneys secrete magnesium in contrast to the carp kidney, and the numerous invaginations of proximal tubule cells membrane are suggested to be a morphological equivalent of the Na/Mg exchange mechanism.
