Changes in oxygen consumption of isolated heart muscle from animals treated with cardio-active drugs

Abstract

Ullrick et al (1956) used muscle-column preparations f rom the rat 's left ventricle to estimate their oxygen consumpt ion and obtained an average value of 12.1 _+ 0 .8 m i c r e 1 / h / m g dry weight c~. Az i zova et al ( 1 9 6 6 ) injected some glucosides into the rats in t ravenously and then estimated the heart muscle oxygen consumption iv_ Warbu rg ' s manometer. The results showed that k -s t rophanth inbeta increased the oxygen consumption up to 1 3 9 ~ 2 0 5 ~ in 2 h, but corchoriside decreased it ~ . Castellucci ( 1976 ) used rabbit heart muscle slices to compare the action of some a .a t iarrhythmic drugs in different concentration regarding their influence on heart muscle oxygen consumption and found that bunaftine, quinidine and propranolol decreased the oxygen consumption, but in lower concentration, on the contrary, increased it, as did lidocaine, and propranolol c ~ 3. In. the present investigation we also used the Warburg ' s manometric method to estimate the oxygen consumption ¢ff the heart muscle slices of guinea pig to observe if any drugs could iv£1uence it.
