Changes in Seasonal Upper Tropical Momentum Fluxes with Global Warming

title={Changes in Seasonal Upper Tropical Momentum Fluxes with Global Warming},
author={Abu Bakar Siddiqui Thakur and Jai Sukhatme},
The boreal summer tropical upper-tropospheric momentum budget involves a balance between eddy and mean meridional fluxes. In winter, however, the eddy flux itself acts to accelerate and decelerate the zonal flow in the Asian and East Pacific regions, respectively. In a zonal mean sense, the residual of these two is then balanced by the mean meridional flux. These features are qualitatively captured by the CMIP6 suite of models in their control runs. With warming, the CMIP6 ensemble shows that… Expand

Tropical Zonal Momentum Balance in the NCEP Reanalyses
The seasonal cycle of the zonal-mean zonal momentum balance in the Tropics is investigated using NCEP reanalysis data. It is found that the climatological stationary waves in the tropical upperExpand
Why Are the Climatological Zonal Winds Easterly in the EquatorialUpper Troposphere
Abstract Using 16 years of NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data on the 200-mb surface, it is shown that in the deep Tropics, the horizontal transient eddy momentum flux accelerates the zonal mean zonal wind.Expand
Zonal mean wind, the Indian monsoon, and July drying in the western Atlantic subtropics
[1] A fully closed zonal momentum budget is decomposed to explain the occurrence of zonal mean easterlies at subtropical latitudes in July. Eddy momentum fluxes from stationary eddies, mostExpand
Global warming pattern formation: sea surface temperature and rainfall.
Abstract Spatial variations in sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall changes over the tropics are investigated based on ensemble simulations for the first half of the twenty-first century underExpand
Impact of anthropogenic forcing on the Asian summer monsoon as simulated by eight GCMs
[1] The response of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) to a transient increase in future anthropogenic radiative forcing is investigated by multi-model global warming experiments. Most models show that,Expand
Higher tropical SSTs strengthen the tropical upwelling via deep convection
Recent observations show a distinct cooling of the tropical lower stratosphere, and chemistry-climate models (CCMs) suggest a link to a strengthening tropical upwelling, arguably related toExpand
Climatology of Intrusions into the Tropical Upper Troposphere
Regions of upper tropospheric equatorial westerly winds, observed over the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans during northern fall to spring, are important for extratropical-tropical interactions. ThisExpand
Evidence of meridional motion in the summer lower stratosphere adjacent to monsoon regions
Twenty-one years of rawinsonde data were used together with 8 years of uninitialized European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analyses to describe the climatological structure ofExpand
Global warming and the weakening of the Asian summer monsoon circulation: assessments from the CMIP5 models
The evolution of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) in a global warming environment is a serious scientific and socio-economic concern since many recent studies have demonstrated the weakening nature ofExpand
Tropopause height and zonal wind response to global warming in the IPCC scenario integrations
[1] The change in the extratropical circulation under global warming is studied using the climate models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fourth assessmentExpand
