The ability of the midbrain reticular formation (MRF) to produce thermogenic responses and to trigger arousal from hibernation was tested during successive quarters of individual hibernation bouts. Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) were implanted with bilateral cannula guides into the MRF.
