We consider a new mechanism for the removal of the angular momentum from an X-ray binary system and the change in its orbital period — the mass loss in the form of a wind from an accretion disc. Both observations and models predict powerful winds from discs in X-ray transients. We have obtained an analytical estimate for the increase in the orbital period of a binary system with a wind from the disc during an outburst, and quantitative estimates are given for the systems XTE J1118+480, A0620−00…

Hard-state Accretion Disk Winds from Black Holes: The Revealing Case of MAXI J1820+070
- PhysicsThe Astrophysical Journal
- 2019
We report on a detailed optical spectroscopic follow-up of the black hole transient MAXI J1820+070 (ASASSN-18ey). The observations cover the main part of the X-ray binary outburst, when the source…
On the Properties of Thermal Disk Winds in X-ray Transient Sources: A Case Study of GRO J1655–40
- Physics
- 2010
We present the results of hydrodynamical simulations of the disk photosphere irradiated by strong X-rays produced in the innermost part of the disk of an accreting black hole. As expected, the…
Accretion and outflow in V404 Cyg
- PhysicsMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
- 2019
We study the optical evolution of the 2015 outburst in V404 Cyg, with emphasis on the peculiar nebular phase and subsequent decay to quiescence. From the decay time-scale of the Balmer emission…
THE FAST SPIRAL-IN OF THE COMPANION STAR TO THE BLACK HOLE XTE J1118+480*
- Physics
- 2012
We report the detection of an orbital period decay of P-dot =-1.83{+-}0.66 ms yr{sup -1} in the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480. This corresponds to a period change of -0.85 {+-} 0.30 {mu}s per…
Modeling of non-stationary accretion disks in X-ray novae A 0620-00 and GRS 1124-68 during outburst

Aims. We address the task of modeling soft X-ray and optical light curves of X-ray novae in the high/soft state. Methods. The analytic model of viscous evolution of an externally truncated accretion…
Determination of the turbulent parameter in accretion discs: effects of self-irradiation in 4U 1543−47 during the 2002 outburst
- Physics
- 2017
We investigate the viscous evolution of the accretion disk in 4U 1543-47, a black hole binary system, during the first 30 days after the peak of the 2002 burst by comparing the observed and…

We analyze photometry of the soft X-ray transient A0620−00 spanning nearly 30 years, including previously published and previously unpublished data. Previous attempts to determine the inclination of…
Fast Orbital Shrinkage of Black Hole X-Ray Binaries Driven by Circumbinary Disks
- PhysicsThe Astrophysical Journal
- 2019
Recently, the black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) Nova Muscae 1991 has been reported to be experiencing an extremely rapid orbital decay. So far, three BHXBs have anomalously high orbital period…
An ionized accretion disc wind in Hercules X-1
- PhysicsMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
