We present the first ≥3.5 (conservative) or ≥5.8 σ (sum-of-lines significance) detection of two warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filaments at z > 0, which we find along the line of sight to the blazar Mrk 421. These systems are detected through highly ionized resonant metal absorption in high-quality Chandra ACIS and HRC Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) spectra of Mrk 421, obtained following our two Target of Opportunity requests during two outburst phases (F0.5-2 keV = 40 and 60… Expand
Chandra View of the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium Toward 1ES 1553+113: Absorption-Line Detections and Identifications. I
We present the first results from our pilot 500 ks Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Large Program observation of the soft X-ray brightest source in the z 0.4 sky, the blazar 1ES 1553+113,Expand
On the Putative Detection of z>0 X-ray Absorption Features in the Spectrum of Markarian 421
In a series of papers, Nicastro et al. have reported the detection of z>0 OVII absorption features in the spectrum of Mrk421 obtained with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating SpectrometerExpand
Detecting the warm-hot intergalactic medium through X-ray absorption lines
The warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at temperatures 1E5-1E7 K is believed to contain 30-50% of the baryons in the local universe. However, all current X-ray detections of the WHIM at redshiftsExpand
XMM-Newton View of the z > 0 Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium toward Markarian 421
The recent detection with Chandra of two warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filaments toward Mrk 421 by Nicastro et al. provides a measurement of the bulk of the "missing baryons" in the nearbyExpand
The O VII X-Ray Forest toward Markarian 421: Consistency between XMM-Newton and Chandra
Recently, the first detections of highly ionized gas associated with two warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) filaments have been reported. The evidence is based on X-ray absorption lines due to OExpand
STUDYING THE WHIM CONTENT OF LARGE-SCALE STRUCTURES ALONG THE LINE OF SIGHT TO H 2356-309
We make use of a 500 ks Chandra HRC-S/LETG spectrum of the blazar H 2356-309, combined with a lower signal-to-noise ratio (S/N; 100 ks) pilot LETG spectrum of the same target, to search for theExpand
PROBING THE LOCAL GROUP MEDIUM TOWARD MARKARIAN 421 WITH CHANDRA AND THE FAR ULTRAVIOLET SPECTROSCOPIC EXPLORER
We report the detection of highly ionized gas at z ~ 0 seen in resonant UV and X-ray absorption lines toward the z = 0.03 blazar Mrk 421. A total of 13 X-ray and three UV lines were measured (orExpand
A possible Chandra and Hubble Space Telescope detection of extragalactic WHIM towards PG 1116+215
(Abridged) We have analyzed Chandra LETG and XMM-Newton RGS spectra towards the z=0.177 quasar PG 1116+215, a sightline that is rendered particularly interesting by the HST detection of several OVIExpand
CHANDRA DETECTION OF LOCAL WARM-HOT GAS TOWARD MARKARIAN 279
