Recent studies have implicated sphingolipids in a variety of intracellular signaling systems. The finding that a calcium-stimulated ceramide kinase copurifies with neurotransmitter-containing vesicles suggests that ceramide, or one of its metabolites, has a role in neurotransmitter release.
