A theoretical model for central inhibition of sexual response is proposed, postulating individual variability in the propensity for such inhibition. Whereas such inhibition is typically adaptive, individuals with high propensity may be vulnerable to sexual dysfunction, and those with low propensity to high risk sexual behavior. Evidence of the existence and localization of such inhibitory mechanisms from both the animal and human literature is reviewed. Evidence of central neurotransmitters… Expand
The dual control model: The role of sexual inhibition and excitation in sexual arousal and behavior.
Psychophysiological studies of sexuality have largely, if not completely, ignored issues of individual variability in responsiveness. Most of the research published in this area involves theExpand
The dual control model of male sexual response: a theoretical approach to centrally mediated erectile dysfunction
A theoretical model of dual control of male sexual response is considered, based on the balancing of central excitation and inhibition, with individuals varying in their propensity for both sexualExpand
The Dual Control Model: Current Status and Future Directions
TLDR
The Dual Control Model proposes that sexual responses involve an interaction between sexual excitatory and sexual inhibitory processes, and that individuals vary in their propensity for both sexual excitation and sexual inhibition, which helps to understand much of the variability in human sexuality. Expand
Genetic and Environmental Effects on Sexual Excitation and Sexual Inhibition in Men
TLDR
The present study analyzed the item structure and the psychometric properties of the instrument in a population based sample of Finnish male twins and estimated the heritability of and the environmental influences on the excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms. Expand
The Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women: Psychometric Properties
TLDR
The development and initial validation of the SESII-W is described, showing good test-retest reliability and discriminant and convergent validity, and the value of using qualitative data to inform questionnaire development. Expand
The role of conditioning, learning and dopamine in sexual behavior: A narrative review of animal and human studies
TLDR
The major empirical findings are highlighted to renew the insight in how stimuli can acquire sexually arousing value and suggestions for future directions in human research are given. Expand
Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Version of the Sexual Inhibition/Sexual Excitation Scales for Men
TLDR
The measures of the Sexual Inhibition and Sexual Excitation Scales had good validity properties and a coherent relationship with sexual sensation seeking and erotophilia and developed a Spanish version in men. Expand
The Dual Control Model of Sexual Response: Relevance of Sexual Excitation and Sexual Inhibition for Sexual Function
Purpose of ReviewThe dual control model of sexual response aims to explain sexual behavior and response through two factors, labeled sexual excitation and sexual inhibition. Sexual dysfunctions areExpand
An Exploratory Study of Factors Associated With Sexual Inhibition and Excitation: Findings From a Representative Survey in Flanders
TLDR
The results indicated that excitation and inhibition had a near normal distribution among men and women, however, the scores for sexual inhibition due to threat of performance failure among men, and for sexual inhibited due to the threat ofperformance consequences among women, were somewhat skewed. Expand
Sexual addiction, sexual compulsivity, sexual impulsivity, or what? Toward a theoretical model
TLDR
An alternative theoretical approach to investigating sexual addiction, sexual compulsivity, and sexual impulsivity mechanisms is proposed based on the dual control model and recent research on the relation between mood and sexuality. Expand

It is postulated that there was greater pressure to inhibit potentially maladaptive emotional, social, and sexual responses on prehistoric women than men in some contexts, resulting in enhanced inhibitory abilities in women in some domains. Expand

TLDR
The evidence is consistent with a role for NA mediation in human sexual arousal, but suggests that more than one NA mediated system exist, involving both central arousal and inhibition of peripheral responses such as erection. Expand

Evidence is provided that dopamine through its different neuronal systems and receptor subtypes plays different roles in the control of several aspects of sexual behavior, supporting a facilitatory role of dopamine in male sexual behavior. Expand
