The central nervous system (CNS) depressant and anticonvulsant activities of iso-6-spectaline (SPEC) were investigated in animal models. The SPEC from Senna spectabilis var. excelsa (Schrad) (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/ kg) injected by oral route (p.o.) in mice caused a significant decrease in the motor activity up to 30 days after the administration and in the dose of 1.0 mg/kg significantly reduced the remaining time on the Rota-rod apparatus. Additionally, SPEC (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg, p.o.) was…

Mikania glomerata: Phytochemical, Pharmacological, and Neurochemical Study

This extract demonstrated anxiolytic effects, which may be mediated by GABAergic system, and was able to increase GABA levels and reduce of glutamate and aspartate concentrations in mice hippocampus, which could represent an interesting therapeutical strategy in the treatment of anxiety.

Anticonvulsant and Sedative Effects of Cassia Alata (Fabaceae) in Mice

It follows that at doses of 200 and 400 mg, the extract of Cassia alata significantly increases and reduces, respectively, the time to onset and the duration of convulsions, and motor activity is significantly reduced by the extract.

The decrease in the level of emotionality of the animals observed in the two experimental models suggests a possible central action, which is in agreement with the phytochemical profile of the oil under study, since it showed the presence of limonene and mircene, components with a well-known depressant activity on the central nervous system.

Effects of Novel 6-Desfluoroquinolones and Classic Quinolones on Pentylenetetrazole-Induced Seizures in Mice

The relationship between the chemical structure and the proconvulsant activity of 6-desfluoroquinolone derivatives was studied and it was observed that, in terms of toxicity to the central nervous system (CNS), the C-6 substituent also appears to play an important role.
