The biologic simplicity personified by Mollicutes cells was exposed by several revolutionary studies that established the utility of examining simple prokaryotes in studying life 13,17,46,53,59. Others have continued to analyze these data and further reveal and illuminate their biochemical wealth 5,30,57. Proteomic studies extended the findings beyond the immediate genome to the expressed proteins 5,123,168. Mollicutes metabolism and molecular biology have been reviewed 36,85,116,122.
