The cellular prion protein (PrPC) is a glycoprotein anchored by glycosylphosphatidylinositol to the cell surface and is abundantly expressed in the central nervous system. A previous study has shown that PrPC contributes to the establishment of infections with intracellular bacteria in macrophages.
